Olive oil polyphenols contribute to the protection of blood lipids from oxidative stress. The beneficial effect is obtained with a daily intake of 20g of olive oil.
This claim has been rigorously evaluated and authorised by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and remains valid in British law (EFSA Panel. EFSA Journal. 2011;9(4):2033).
To qualify for this claim, olive oil must contain at least 5 mg of hydroxytyrosol and its derivatives per 20g. Oleaphen exceeds this threshold by 892%.
The scientific foundation
The EFSA Panel on Dietetic Products, Nutrition and Allergies reviewed the totality of evidence and concluded in 2011 that a cause-and-effect relationship had been established between the consumption of olive oil polyphenols and protection of LDL particles from oxidative damage (EFSA Panel on Dietetic Products, Nutrition and Allergies. EFSA Journal. 2011;9(4):2033). This conclusion was based on human intervention studies demonstrating that polyphenol-rich olive oil consumption led to measurable reductions in markers of LDL oxidation.
Why does LDL oxidation matter?
Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol becomes problematic primarily when it undergoes oxidative modification. Oxidised LDL particles are more likely to penetrate and accumulate in arterial walls, triggering inflammatory responses that contribute to atherosclerosis. By helping protect LDL from oxidation, olive oil polyphenols may support cardiovascular health at a fundamental mechanistic level.
Research has demonstrated that after consuming polyphenol-rich olive oil, these protective compounds are incorporated directly into LDL particles, where they can exert antioxidant effects from within.
