    While topical olive oil has traditional uses, emerging research examines whether consuming polyphenol-rich olive oil may support skin health from the inside out.

    Antioxidant protection

    Skin cells face constant oxidative stress from UV radiation, pollution and normal metabolism. The powerful antioxidant properties of olive oil polyphenols, particularly hydroxytyrosol, may help support the body's antioxidant defences, potentially protecting skin cells from oxidative damage. The authorised health claim confirms that olive oil polyphenols contribute to the protection of lipids from oxidative stress (EFSA Panel on Dietetic Products, Nutrition and Allergies.     Systemic distribution

    Research has confirmed that after consumption, olive oil polyphenols are absorbed and distributed throughout the body. Studies tracking hydroxytyrosol metabolism show this compound reaches measurable concentrations in plasma and tissues following olive oil consumption, providing biological plausibility for systemic effects including potential skin health benefits (Miro-Casas E, et al.     Research comparing metabolic pathways confirms that hydroxytyrosol is effectively absorbed and utilized in humans, though excretion patterns differ from animal models (Visioli F, et al. J Nutr. 2003;133(8):2612-2615).

    What this means

    The antioxidant polyphenols in olive oil are absorbed and distributed throughout the body. Research suggests these compounds may help support skin health from within by supporting cellular antioxidant defences. The authorised cardiovascular claim regarding protection from oxidative stress may extend to other tissues exposed to oxidative damage, including skin.
