    Elite athletes increasingly seek natural dietary approaches to support training, performance and recovery. High-polyphenol olive oil has attracted attention in the athletic community, with use among Premier League footballers and other professional sportspeople.

    Current clinical research

    Oleaphen is currently being evaluated in a clinical trial conducted by the University of Cyprus in collaboration with the Centre of Excellence in Research and Innovation (CYENS). This study examines the effects of high-polyphenol olive oil supplementation on professional football players, specifically measuring impacts on recovery markers and reflex performance. This represents cutting-edge research into how ultra-high-polyphenol olive oil may support athletic function in elite competitive settings.

    Exercise-induced oxidative stress

    Intense physical training generates oxidative stress as a natural by-product of increased metabolism. While some oxidative stress may trigger beneficial adaptations, excessive oxidative damage can impair recovery. The authorised health claim confirms that olive oil polyphenols contribute to the protection of blood lipids from oxidative stress (EFSA Panel on Dietetic Products, Nutrition and Allergies. EFSA Journal. 2011;9(4):2033). This cardiovascular protection has particular relevance for athletes, as intense training increases lipid oxidation throughout the body.

    Anti-inflammatory support for recovery

    The inflammatory response following intense exercise is part of the recovery and adaptation process, but excessive inflammation may delay recovery. The anti-inflammatory properties of oleocanthal - the compound sharing mechanistic similarities with pharmaceutical anti-inflammatory agents through COX enzyme inhibition - have led researchers to investigate whether olive oil polyphenols might support post-exercise recovery (Beauchamp GK, et al. Nature. 2005;437(7055):45-46).

    Unlike pharmaceutical anti-inflammatories, which some research suggests might blunt training adaptations when used chronically, dietary polyphenols provide antioxidant and anti-inflammatory support through food-based mechanisms that may complement rather than interfere with athletic adaptation.

    Professional adoption

    Beyond clinical research, the adoption of high-polyphenol olive oil by elite athletes suggests perceived benefits. Professional sportspeople and their nutritionists have incorporated ultra high-polyphenol olive oils into training nutrition protocols, seeking natural compounds that support performance without conflicting with anti-doping regulations or interfering with training adaptations.

    What this means

    The ongoing clinical trial with professional football players at the University of Cyprus represents the first rigorous examination of ultra high-polyphenol olive oil's effects on elite athletic performance and recovery. While results are pending, the established antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of olive oil polyphenols provide a theoretical basis for benefits in athletic contexts. The authorised cardiovascular claim has direct relevance to training stress, with Oleaphen's concentration of 2,236 mg/kg total polyphenols - including approximately 1,600 mg/kg oleocanthal - providing substantially higher levels than typical olive oils.
